Ludmila Muchina was born on 18 June 1947 in Kiev into a family with Czech roots. Her uncle was the legendary Czechoslovak resistance fighter Jan Smudek. She graduated summa cum laude from economics at the Kiev University of National Economics in 1969. From 1971 to 2007 she taught economy at the National University of Civilian Aviation in Kiev, where she started out as a scientific assistant and was tenured as a professor from 2001. In the 1980s she and her husband - an Antonov construction designer - spent three years in India. In 1995 she was elected deputy chairlady and in 1996 chairlady of the Czech National Council of Ukraine, an umbrella organisation for all the Czech expatriate societies in Ukraine. Her activities in the expatriate association earned her the Gratias agit Award in 2014 from the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs for promoting the good name of the Czech Republic abroad. Ludmila Muchina is married, she has two sons.
