  • "Well, we had to wear the 'N' [for Němec], as in German. Yeah. - You too? - Me too. But I didn't wear it much. My brothers did, only briefly. My cousin, the son of my uncle who was the mayor; his name was Joseph and he wore the 'N'. They played there in front of the rectory; they lived in front of the rectory by the church. A bomb hit there. Well, they were playing and speaking German. The parish priest admonished them. They were babbling in German, just kids. The priest told him not to speak German; it was dangerous. There was an older cousin, born in 1937, the one who moved to Munich afterwards. He said to the priest, 'Can't you see he's wearing an 'N'? How does he talk if he has an 'N' on his back? He's branded, so let him speak German.'"

  • "We always collected grenades with the boys, mostly war grenades. We were good at that. There were still trenches, and we had the igniter cord... and we were so happy when it exploded. It was very dangerous, though. One lost his life at the opposite end in Rybniční Street. He was playing with a hand grenade and it exploded in his hand and he was dead. I know of one more. The boy was as old as me. Benek Gerhard of Novodvorská Street. There was a tank there. It was broken but nobody took it away. He found a hand grenade in the tank and went to a friend who was my schoolmate. His name was Pepík Duda. Joseph. He went to his house, called him out and showed him the grenade. There was one more boy from Kobierzyce present. As they were talking, he armed the grenade, it exploded and Duda lost his life. He was dead. Gerhard lost his leg. They amputated his leg. The one from Kobierzyce was just a little bit scarred and went on to live in peace afterwards. But Benek lost his leg."

  • "I remember my older brothers went to the 'hajot' and brought me along. I went once but never again afterwards. It was 'hajot pimpf'... 'Pimpf, ich melde mich zum Dienst! [Pimpf, I'm reporting for duty!]'... I was meant to reply like that on arriving. That's what it was. - Why didn't you go more than once? You didn't like it? - Nobody forced me to go. Grandma said I shouldn't go there anymore. She wouldn't let me go. - Did your brothers wear any costume when they went to the barracks? - No, no. I don't remember them wearing a costume. There were some older ones and they had costumes. I also vaguely remember them marching. Like when it was a holiday... Yeah. "Hajot - Hitler Youth." Note: Pimpf is Austrian German for "kid" or "spot". Hence, the German sentence can be translated as 'Kid, reporting for duty!' because the term Pimpf in this case can be understood as a military rank.

I was with the Hitler Youth once, then my grandmother wouldn‘t let me.

Vilém Lasák was born in Štěpánkovice in the Hlučín region on 10 October 1935 into a bricklayer‘s family. During the great recession, his father could not find a job, so he went to Germany to work. The mother took care of the children and a small farm. In the autumn of 1938, Vilém Lasák experienced the evacuation of Hlučín area children to the Baltic coast. In the spring of 1945, he fled with his mother and siblings from Štěpánkovice again from the approaching frontline of the Ostrava-Opava Operation. In the early months after the war, the family feared deportation to Germany; a large part of the Hlučín area population was actually deported. The witness began learning Czech at age ten in the fourth grade of primary school. He trained as a painter and decorator and worked with a construction company in Ostrava. During his military service in Šumava in 1955-1957, he saw leaflets flown in from the West. At the time of filming in 2025, he was living in a house he had built in Štěpánkovice in the 1960s.
