  • "When the workers of the drying plant, which was the highest risk workplace, came to our lab, they wore special filters they were supposed to wear at work. When they came to us and took the filters off, we could see that they were slightly dusty from the uranium concentrate on their faces around the outline of the protective filter."

  • "I knew people there [at MAPE Mydlovary] from the full range of jobs that were there. If I had to comment, I would personally say that if you made a statistic taking into account individual worksites, in my opinion there is a high level of probability that there would be a workplace, by which I mean a drying plant, where cancer incidence and the age of death would be significantly out of the average - whether on a national level or among the workers at Mape Mydlovary. I think the people who worked at the drying plant - you could see that their age of death was statistically significantly lower."

  • "It was simple there [at MAP Mydlovary]. All the uranium that was produced was taken to Russia. There was no other option. That was known. Even though it said 'Our uranium serves peace' above the entrance gate through which one entered MAPE, all the uranium produced was taken to the then Soviet Union."

  • "The factory had a Special Section ('ZO') within its structure. The Special Section was in responsible for ensuring that all workers who worked at MAPE Mydlovary complied with the prescribed required level of inspection. Depending on what information you encountered as part of your work, you were either 'classified', 'top secret', or 'top secret of special importance'. I worked in the chemistry lab as a supervisor and was classified 'top secret' (PT) there. This means that I came into contact with information that was classified top secret by its nature. This means that I knew things such as how much uranium was being produced, what the concentration was in the final product, what ores were processed, and what their concentration was."

I was aware of the risk. We all were.

Jaroslav Janešík was born in České Budějovice on 7 June 1951 as the second eldest of four children to Marie Janešíková and Rudolf Janešík. He spent his childhood in Borovany. Both of his parents worked blue-collar jobs at Calofrig in Borovany all their lives. He fell in love with chemistry in primary school and made it his lifelong profession. He studied at the high school of chemistry in Pardubice. Having graduated in 1970, he entered the University of Chemical Technology in Prague. He interrupted his studies at his own request after the first semester and returned to South Bohemia. He joined MAPE Mydlovary in 1971 as an analytical chemist at the chemical uranium ore treatment plant. This was the only place in the country where all the uranium ore mined across Czechoslovakia was collected and processed. MAPE Mydlovary was thus one of the strategic enterprises of the communist state, shipping virtually all the uranium concentrate it produced to the Soviet Union. Jaroslav Janešík describes the specific operational and safety procedures of the uranium ore processing plant during the normalisation period. The company was subject to strict supervision and employees were regularly screened for eligibility to access with state secrets by the plant‘s Special Section (‚ZO‘). Those who failed the screening were dismissed. He left MAPE Mydlovary in the autumn of 1989 and took a similar job at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant (JETE) where he worked until retirement in 2014. At the time of filming (2025), he was living with his wife Bohumila in České Budějovice.
