Pavel Coufal

* 1956

  • "I was actually one of the oldest there at the time because those older than me, when scouting ended, they quit. They were Boy Scouts, they lived through the sixty-eight, the sixty-nine... And the camp in the year 1970. Then they stopped going when they were, I don't know, 15, 16, 17. So I was automatically among the oldest ones there."

  • "He went on expeditions with us, he did interesting club meetings. He knew a lot of history, he knew half the world, he knew world scouting, he had all these different relics, badges, flags, a little library. So that's basically what we lived for. I lived it up until that 1970 to 1971 when he was still doing it secretly. And then, when it got out among the juniors that he was still going to that troop, it was arranged that he shouldn't go then because it would be dangerous for the members of the troop and us as leaders."

  • "The way I noticed it, I went to buy something in the city, as they used to say, on Wenceslas Square, Příkopy. And it was on that very day. There was just a cluster of people there, there were probably still some leftovers from the fire, and there were leaflets. Probably some kind of justification. I regret to this day that it didn't occur to me, as a kid, that I didn't take one of those leflets down. There was just this justification hanging there, I don't even know if I read it at the time, but it was there."

For twenty years we operated in secret, not even the stalwart scouts knew about us

Pavel Coufal was born on 11 January 1956 in Prague. His family had a few backgrnound stains, his grandfather was a tradesman and his grandmother came from a farmer´s family. The family also belonged to the Czech Brethren Evangelical Church. Pavel Coufal joined a scout troop in 1970 and was nicknamed Chobot (Trunk). In the spring he took the Scout oath, but in September 1970 the Scout was dissolved. The leader of the troop, Josef Zikán, called Bobr (Beaver), transferred the Vinohrady Scout Troop to the Prague 3 Troop, where it continued to operate secretly from 1971. Pavel Coufal became one of the leaders and led the scout troop partly within the Svazarm activities until the Velvet Revolution. In the meantime, he trained as a tram repairer at the Transport Company‘s apprenticeship centre and completed his studies at secondary technical evening school. He graduated in 1979 and then served two years of compulsory military service. He has been involved in scouting all his life. In the 1990s, his Troop 1 Nik Scouts enjoyed great interest, and to this day there is a long waiting list for membership. Pavel Coufal no longer has any leadership position in the troop, but still goes on expeditions with the old scouts. During his active leadership, over 1500 members passed through the troop. In 2025 Pavel Coufal lived in Prague.
