Carlos Cabrera was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1962 and has lived in Madrid since 1991. He remembers a pleasant childhood, shaped by family life and time spent at the beach, and a youth that unfolded within the revolutionary process, in a family committed to the Cuban Revolution. Before emigrating, he worked as an assistant correspondent for the foreign news agencies EFE and IPS, covering historic events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the socialist bloc, as well as the profound changes taking place in Cuba. The Cuban government revoked his press credentials because of the content of his reporting and gave him the choice between “re-education” or leaving the country, which led him to emigrate to Spain. Carlos describes migration as a positive and formative experience that distanced him from any totalitarian temptation. From exile, he views the situation in Cuba as very serious and describes the country as a failed state marked by scarcity and repression. He believes the future of Cuba depends on Cubans themselves and advocates a transition to democracy based on forgiveness, but not forgetting.
