Second Lieutenant Stepan Barna

* 1979

  • "I've seen everything. I have been to Maidan many times - I used to go there from Ternopil. At the beginning I organized Maidan in Ternopil, but at that time I didn't know that it would be a national Maidan. We started handing out ribbons saying 'Ukraine is the EU'. I even have photos of it somewhere. And just a few days later Maidan really started. Many people thought I knew in advance, but it was not true. I simply started handing out ribbons with a group of people and then I went to Maidan in Kiev. Subsequently, we set up a Maidan support centre in Ternopil. This organisation sent people to Kiev - we took shifts every day to transport people and food. It became our daily work."

  • "First, 'For evil to triumph, silence is enough,' said a philosopher, referring to the movie 'Hitler.' Second: unpunished evil will sooner or later become twice as strong. I direct these words to those who pretend that nothing is happening. To those who say that the war is far away, two thousand kilometres from the Czech Republic. They are deeply mistaken. Today's wars are technological, hybrid, and will last for a very long time. What is happening now in Ukraine is the opening of Pandora's box on the European continent. That is why today I would like to call on everyone not to be indifferent to the challenges facing the civilised world, the countries of the European Union. As long as Ukraine is fighting, Europe is safe. However, none of us knows what will happen tomorrow in the mind of Putin or whoever comes after him. Where will they go? To Estonia? Finland? Poland? They could strike anywhere. And given that Russia is a nuclear power, the consequences could be unpredictable. It is all the more important that we do everything in our power to weaken Russia as much as possible diplomatically, economically and militarily. And we do this by helping Ukraine. Let us help in whatever way we can."

  • "When the bombs started falling towards our trench, my partner, nicknamed Cyhan, suffered a concussion. I didn't even know what the word meant at the time because it wasn't used. He lost his hearing and had a headache. They evacuated me because of that, because we were a team. Cyhan was sent for treatment and I returned to the rear, to my unit, to the artillery platoon of the motorized infantry battalion. That night I talked to a soldier, had a drink with him, and he was sent to my position. He died the next day, right where I was the night before. It was a direct hit from a Russian tank that had been firing at that position from morning till night. The tank arrived in the morning and all day long it was just: bang, bang, bang, bang. And that's how it got to our position. He fired first from left to right, then from right to left. Then the air force came - you're sitting on the position and everything is shaking, trees are falling, that was the air force's job. And then the artillery, that's another chapter. They sent a few Russians as bait for our unit to shoot them. They killed them, but their aim was not to take our position. They wanted us to expose our artillery position."

Stepan Barna was born on October 9, 1979 in the village of Nahirianka in Ternopil region in what is now Ukraine, former Soviet Union. Both parents, Svetlana and Stepan, worked as teachers in the local village school. Stepan‘s father and older brother Oleh were actively involved in the revolutionary events during the independence of Ukraine (1991). Even in the period before the annexation of Crimea (2014), Stepan was involved in civic initiatives aimed at unifying the country, promoting freedom and mitigating Russian power. After the Crimean annexation, he participated in the formation of armed units from among volunteers. He was also been politically involved - since 2014 as a member of the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine), and from 2015 to 2019 as Governor of Ternopil region. From the position of governor he was appointed commander of the newly formed 105th Territorial Defence Unit in 2018. In 2019, he volunteered to join the 10th Edelweiss Mountain Assault Brigade, and after the Russian invasion of Ukraine (2022), he participated with his unit in frontline fighting (not only) in the Donbas region. His brother Oleh also volunteered for the army and was killed in 2023 near the town of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region. As of 2025, Stepan Barna served at the rank of second lieutenant as the commander of the unmanned aerial systems platoon of the motorized infantry battalion of the 10th Edelweiss Mountain Assault Brigade.
