Věra Koudelková, née Štěpánková, went to school in Veselá, where she was taught by Karel Hlaváček, a resistance fighter and member of the ÚVOD (The Central Leadership of the Domestic Resistance). In 1941, her mentally ill grandfather set fire to the family farm and everything, including the animals, was burnt to the ground. After the fire, her aunt from Brandýs nad Orlicí took her in, where she lived for several years. Věra Koudelková did not recall coming into close contact with the totalitarian authorities, she did not know of anyone who was persecuted in her neighbourhood and the collectivisation did not affect her family.
