  • born on 5th May in 1931 in Brno
  • in May 1945 she was deported to Siberia at age of 14 together with her younger sister Nada, who was 9 years old, and mother Ljuba
  • she spent 20 years in Gulag together, 8 years in different labor wood camps, she cut wood 12 hours a day in inhuman conditions, she survived typhus, mother Ljuba died within 3 months
  • another 12 years she had worked as a slave in different mines, factories and a fish processing boat, she survived hell on Earth
  • by sheer luck she met a man from kolkhoz in 1961, who had contact with other kolkhoz in Czechoslovakia. He was able to get permission for both sisters to get work in Czechoslovakia.
  • the whole procedure took 4 years, in 1964 both sisters successfully left USSR and returned to Czechoslovakia
  • Vera was 34 years old and weighed 37 kilos when she arrived home
  • for the next 30 years she kept silent, her husband died without knowing his wife spent 20 years in Gulag, only after the fall of communism her sons have realized about her past in USSR, communist secret police was spying on her permanently, until 1974 she had to visit a police station in Brno every month to repeatedly sign statement she would never speak about her past in Gulag, or else she would be returned back to USSR
  • she unsuccessfully applied for compensation
  • her life story is covered by the book Krvavé Jahody (Bloody Strawberries)
