Oral History of Lviv

Western Ukrainian Historical Research Center / The Center for Urban History of East Central Europe / Ministerstvo zahraničních věcí ČR

The goal of the project is to collect oral testimony of Lviv residents, pertaining to their life in the city. By doing this, we intend to trace and illustrate the changes that touched both individual streets or neighborhoods, and the city in general, with its residents. Several smaller oral history projects, dedicated to particular streets and parts of Lviv, will be implemented as part of the larger project. A project on the history of Bohomoltsia st. was implemented in 2008–2009. The collected materials were presented in 2009, in an exhibition, entitled “Open! How We Live, How Others Live”. The next project entails the research of a district in the southwestern sector of the city, known as Kastelivka. This district, which contained mostly villas, underwent significant changes in the twentieth century. The next project will be dedicated to Pidzamche – the traditional industrial and working-class district of the city, where the Jewish ghetto was located in the years of the Nazi occupation.
